Tom Kontos

Chief Economist
KAR Auction Services, Inc.

Tom Kontos is chief economist of KAR Auction Services, Inc.

As chief economist and leader of KAR Analytical Services, Kontos interfaces with key clients and dealers, Wall Street and automotive analysts, and members of the media to provide information and insight on economic trends in the vehicle remarketing industry and scrap metal markets, in which KAR subsidiaries ADESA and IAA are major players. Kontos provides analytical services in the form of periodic reports on used-vehicle and salvage price trends, monthly podcasts, floorplan financing and profitability insights, and other strategic studies. He also plays an integral role in developing remarketing and salvage strategies with customers across the KAR family of companies, including large dealer groups.

Kontos is the architect and author of Pulse, a semi-annual review published by KAR that provides comprehensive analysis of strategic trends and issues relating to the 40-million-unit used vehicle market and the $80 billion vehicle remarketing industry in North America. He also contributes to IAA’s OnTrack, a periodic report delivering deep economic analysis and insights on hot topics impacting salvage auctions, as well as quarterly and annual reports on the specialty and salvage segments.

In recognition of his pioneering economic forecasting and thought leadership in the used-vehicle and salvage industry, Kontos and his work have received numerous awards. Pulse and its predecessor Global Vehicle Remarketing have been extremely well received by the automotive industry, often cited in the trade press, and honored with the prestigious APEX and Keystone awards for excellence in investment and financial materials. Most recently, Kontos was honored with the Ed Bobit Icon of the Automotive Industry Award by the International Automotive Remarketers Alliance and the National Auto Auction Association in 2016.

Kontos has more than 25 years of experience in market research, financial analysis and strategic planning. Prior to joining KAR, Kontos helped launch and was the principal author of the ADT Automotive Used Car Market Report, which Kontos saw through five editions. In addition to his automotive industry experience, he has conducted economic analyses of the mining, agricultural and construction sectors through his experience with W.R. Grace & Co., Vulcan Materials Company and Rogers Group, Inc.

A native of Washington, D.C., Kontos holds both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mineral resource economics from Pennsylvania State University. He has taught at Birmingham-Southern College and Trevecca University and participated in the Master of Liberal Arts and Science Program at Vanderbilt University.
